Synopsis, Authors’ Note & Casting Breakdown

About the Play…

In the mystical woods of Vermont, the veil thins between the living and dead. There, in the space between worlds, exists “The InBetween” — a timeless purgatory where souls wait, tethered to a lost life they can’t remember. This world is forever changed when a young girl, Willow, vanishes from Earth without a trace. Her mother, Chlo, embarks on a desperate search to find her that leads to this otherworldly realm. Drawn into The InBetween, Chlo stirs a storm that unearths long-buried grief and forces both the living and dead to forge a path through impossible loss. Woven through haunting folk melodies and earthly poetry, The Waiting asks: "What if death wasn’t the end?”

From the Playwrights….

Henry can be played by any actor of any voice part or gender identity. The gender binary is deconstructed in the afterlife and through flexible keys and vocal opts, these tracks are molded around the actor and cast based on core essence rather than external identity.

In casting The Waiting, we seek to prioritize “non-traditional” musical theatre voices, celebrating individuality and vocal style. The musical has a folk score, and we are looking for singers who are comfortable in that genre. We are seeking to assemble a cast of actors diverse in gender identity, race/ethnicity, ability, and body type.

About the Role…

Henry - The newest Echo, and a boundary pusher in the InBetween. Henry is dissatisfied with waiting, and pushes to find answers about why all of these souls are trapped. Henry spins wild stories to entertain the Echoes, and has an unrelenting curiosity and unsatiated need to find out the secrets of their forgotten past. Seeking BIPOC actors with tenor range with a mix/belt up to an A4.
